When Commitment Counts

Emily and DomingoSteve Chandler, in almost all his books, addresses the question often asked by many, “There are things that seem to distract me from my goal – why can’t I stay focused on a goal?”

And his response is always the same, “It’s not a strong enough goal.  It’s not a commitment yet.  If you’re commited to something, you can achieve it.”

Next week, on September 22, Scott and I will celebrate our 30th wedding anniversary. In today’s terms, that’s a long time – that’s quite a commitment – and quite an achievement.  When I share my upcoming celebration with others – I often get ‘congratulations’ as a response.  It seems odd I’d be congratulated for living with one person for 30 years, but I get it.  Too many people give up on a good thing.  Because they’re not commited to it.  Scott and I made a pledge years ago, for better for worse, richer or poorer, you know the words….but we meant it.  And I know that this is the reason we celebrate next week.  Are we perfect, has everything in our lives happened according to plan – have we agreed on everything – have big and little things often sent us in different directions – you bet!  But when you’re committed to something – you find a way- it’s just that simple.  You can say ‘no’ to certain distractions, only if you’ve said ‘yes’ to something more important. You don’t let anything get in the way of your goal!  Try it – trust me – it works!  And I’ve got a lifelong vow to prove it!  Happy Anniversary Scott, I love you.

  1. I had to read this several times since it was posted before I could start understanding and applying it but, this really seems to be the secret to goal achievement, and how to live a successful goal oriented life. Thanks for sharing. Congratulations on 30 YEARS of commitment! YEA life!

  2. Hi Deb,

I woke up thinking about you and the 55th birthday you will be celebrating today! I am glad that you and Scott have 30 years to celebrate. Around your anniversary, I was hosting the first Sand Canyon House Music Festival so I was celebrating you too, old friend!

Your blog is a great reflection of years of living, loving and figuring things out. I hope to reconnect with you through this on-line place where your most positive energy is going. Congratulations on that as well. I have used the Coyote greeting cards you sent me a few years ago, especially to send messages from the heart to my kids.

Looking forward to talking with you…soon!

    Love, Linda
